<p>Whether you’re a novice in <strong>how to brush your cat</strong> or you’re looking to refine your technique, we’ve got you covered with insights and tips. Let’s face it, while our cats might opt for a tongue bath to express affection, we humans are better off with a good old brush – it’s less awkward and far more socially acceptable! Plus, it’s a fabulous way to maintain your cat&#8217;s coat in tip-top shape, offering all the love without any of the… let’s say, more ‘intimate’ grooming habits of our furry companions.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding your cat’s brushing needs</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="e25f75" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #e25f75;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1600x897.webp" alt="Cream-colored cat sitting next to a wooden brush on a pink background" class="wp-image-4557 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="e25f75" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #e25f75;" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1600x897.webp" alt="Cream-colored cat sitting next to a wooden brush on a pink background" class="wp-image-4557 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cat_with_brush_pink_background.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>Now, stepping away from our human-versus-cat grooming techniques, we turn our attention to the variety in <em>their</em> world. From the sleek short-haired <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-breeds/siamese-cat-elegance-extreme-and-endless-chats/">Siamese </a>to the plush long-haired <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-breeds/persian-cat-the-world-of-royal-fluffiness/">Persian cat</a>, each type of fur requires a unique approach to brushing. Recognizing and adapting to your cat’s specific fur type is key in ensuring they receive the best care.</p>

<p>Brushing offers various benefits for cats, not only <strong>to keep their coat sleek and mat-free</strong> but also <strong>to stimulate skin circulation and reduce hairballs</strong>. But how do you know if you’re doing it right? A well-brushed cat is the picture of feline contentment and health. You’re looking for smooth, shiny fur, free of tangles, and a cat that revels in the comfort of grooming. As your cat grows older, her reduced mobility may hinder her ability to groom effectively, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Helping her with regular brushing becomes increasingly important to keep her coat well-maintained and healthy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Choosing the right tools</h2>

<p>Selecting the right brush for <strong>your</strong> cat ensures her comfort and health during grooming sessions. Let’s explore the best tools for the task!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Soft brushes</h3>

<p>Soft brushes are a perfect choice for cats with sensitive skin or short hair. They are designed to be gentle, ensuring that grooming is a comfortable experience for them. You’ll find a variety of models in the market, some with bristles on one side, while others feature bristles on both sides. This dual-sided design often includes one side with softer bristles and the other with firmer bristles, often made from stainless steel for tackling tougher mats or for a more thorough grooming session. Such versatility makes soft brushes an essential tool in your cat grooming kit.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Metal brushes</h3>

<p>Metal brushes come in a couple of distinct types, each serving a different purpose in your cat’s grooming routine. The wire-slicker brush, with its fine, densely packed bristles, is gentle on the skin despite its appearance. It’s perfect for medium or long coats, adept at removing loose hair and smoothing out the fur without irritating her delicate skin.</p>

<p>Then there’s the single-row wire shearing brush, which might look quite simple but is highly effective. Its thicker metal bristles work as shears and its rounded tips to prevent any accidents, making it safe for your cat’s grooming session. This type is excellent for cutting through knots and removing excess fur. When using it, remember to be as gentle as possible to avoid tugging on her fur, ensuring a comfortable experience for your kitty cat.</p>

<p>Similarly, specialized de-shedding tools like the FURminator® are popular choices for efficiently removing the undercoat and loose hair from your cat’s coat. These tools are designed with a fine-toothed edge that reaches through the topcoat to gently remove the undercoat and loose fur without cutting the skin or damaging the topcoat. When choosing a de-shedding tool like this, it’s important to pick one that matches your cat’s size and coat length. The right fit ensures a comfortable grooming session and effective fur removal.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Silicone and rubber brushes</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="e7bb29" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #e7bb29;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1600x897.webp" alt="Long-haired orange kitten with a yellow silicone brush on a yellow background" class="wp-image-4561 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="e7bb29" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #e7bb29;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1600x897.webp" alt="Long-haired orange kitten with a yellow silicone brush on a yellow background" class="wp-image-4561 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/silicone_brush_for_cats.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>Silicone and rubber brushes offer a soft and flexible alternative that’s gentle on your cat’s skin and effective at removing loose fur. Their pliable bristles massage the skin while collecting hair, which can then be easily peeled away from the brush, making cleanup a breeze. For cats that are not fond of traditional brushes, a mitt brush might be the solution. This glove-like brush allows you to pet your cat while removing loose fur, which can make the grooming process more enjoyable for your cat.</p>

<p><strong>Insider tip</strong>: consider silicone finger toothbrushes – they’re not just for dental hygiene! These little gadgets can be repurposed for a delightful chin massage, providing a soothing experience for your cat while also strengthening your bond. These nifty toothbrushes can also be used for a very gentle(!) massage under the eyes to help reduce tear stains.</p>

<p>A successful brushing session with your cat is not just about what you do, but also about when and where you do it. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure that the experience is positive and stress-free for both of you.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Preparing for brushing – a calm environment</h3>

<p>Before you even pick up a brush, create a serene space where your cat feels safe and relaxed. Choose a quiet time of day when she is most at ease, perhaps after a meal or a playful session. Make sure the lighting is soft and the area is familiar to her – this will set the stage for a peaceful grooming experience for both of you.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Monitoring your cat’s energy levels</h3>

<p>Understanding her energy levels can help determine the best times for brushing. Observe her tail movement; a relaxed tail usually means she’s calm and may be more receptive to brushing.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Techniques for different brushes</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="caad85" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #caad85;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1600x897.webp" alt="Wooden slicker brush against a colorful blue and yellow background with green leaves" class="wp-image-4563 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="caad85" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #caad85;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1600x897.webp" alt="Wooden slicker brush against a colorful blue and yellow background with green leaves" class="wp-image-4563 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/slicker_brush_colorful_background.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>Each type of brush requires its own technique. When using any brush, ensure to<strong> follow the natural direction of your cat’s fur growth</strong>, and always <strong>be gentle</strong> to prevent causing any discomfort or irritation. The goal is to <strong>detangle and remove loose hair</strong> without irritating the skin. When it comes to de-shedding tools, apply minimal pressure to avoid discomfort. Remember, the brush should do the work, not your force. Regular brushing can be a weekly routine for short-haired cats, but long-haired cats may benefit from more frequent sessions, especially during shedding seasons.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Brushing different areas (back, underbelly, tail)</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Start at the neck</strong>: Begin brushing next to her head and neck area. Cats usually find this spot comforting and it’s a good place to help her get used to the brushing.</li>

<li><strong>Back and sides</strong>: Once she’s relaxed with the brushing at the neck, gradually move down to her back and sides. These areas are less sensitive and allow her to ease into the process.</li>

<li><strong>Legs</strong>: Carefully brush her legs, being cautious around the more sensitive areas where there is less fur. Many cats are sensitive about their legs and paws, so watch her reactions.</li>

<li><strong>Underbelly</strong>: Approach her underbelly carefully, as this area can be tricky for some cats. Ensure to be extra gentle to avoid startling her.</li>

<li><strong>Tail</strong>: Finish by brushing her tail, paying special attention to being gentle around the sensitive base. Be observant of her reactions to make sure she’s comfortable.</li>

<li><strong>Observe and adapt</strong>: Throughout the brushing session, keep an eye on her behavior and reactions. Adjust your technique as needed to maintain her comfort and relaxation.<a href="https://www.catster.com/gear/common-types-of-cat-brushes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"></a></li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Recognizing your cat’s responses when brushing</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="ca7c4f" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #ca7c4f;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1600x897.webp" alt="Kitten looking curiously at a pink silicone grooming brush on a yellow-pink background" class="wp-image-4564 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="ca7c4f" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #ca7c4f;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1600x897.webp" alt="Kitten looking curiously at a pink silicone grooming brush on a yellow-pink background" class="wp-image-4564 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/kitten_with_pink_silicone_brush.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>Understanding your cat’s reactions during brushing is crucial for a positive grooming experience. Let’s look at how you can interpret her responses and adjust your technique accordingly.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Positive signs</h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Closing eyes slowly</strong>: A cat that closes her eyes slowly while being brushed is showing trust and pleasure.</li>

<li><strong>Purring</strong>: This is an indication that she’s enjoying the brushing session. Purring often means your cat is relaxed and content.</li>

<li><strong>Leaning into the brush</strong>: If she leans into the brush or rubs against it, it’s a sign that she likes the pressure and the area you are brushing.</li>
</ul>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Negative signs</h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Tail flicking</strong>: A flicking tail is a sign of irritation. If her tail starts to flick rapidly, it’s time to reassess your technique or give her a break.</li>

<li><strong>Hissing or growling</strong>: These are unmistakable signs of displeasure. If she hisses or growls, it’s best to stop brushing immediately.</li>

<li><strong>Swatting at the brush</strong>: This indicates that she’s irritated or not enjoying the brushing. It might be the area you are brushing or the way you are doing it. She may also be in a playful mood.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Playtime and brushing – setting boundaries</h3>

<p>It’s important to distinguish between playtime and brushing time. <strong>Brushes should not be used as toys</strong>, as this can confuse your cat and make brushing sessions more challenging. Establish brushing as a calm and separate activity.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The importance of not over-brushing</h3>

<p>Over-brushing your cat can have adverse effects on her skin and fur health. It can, for example, lead to irritation, especially with stiffer bristles or de-shedding brushes. This can strip away natural oils from her coat, leaving it dry and brittle. It’s crucial to recognize the <strong>signs of over-brushing</strong> and balance your process with her natural fur maintenance. Brushing should complement your cat’s natural grooming habits, not replace them. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Warning signs of over-brushing</h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Skin Irritation</strong>: Redness, inflammation, or flakiness on your cat’s skin can be indicators of over-brushing.</li>

<li><strong>Hair Loss</strong>: If you notice excessive hair loss or bald patches, this could be a sign that you’re brushing too much.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Post-brushing rewards and affection</h3>

<p><a href="https://thecatedition.com/living-with-cats/training/how-to-reward-your-cat-with-and-without-treats/">Reward</a> your cat after a brushing session with treats or affection. This helps build positive associations with brushing and can be a great bonding experience.</p>

<p><strong>To brush your cat</strong> just remember you need to find the right brush for your cat, depending on how matted her coat gets usually. This way you can maintain her appearance as well as an even stronger bond with your furry friend. If you have any grooming experiences you can share them with fellow cat lovers in the comments.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Importance of starting early.</strong> </h3>

<p>Introducing dental care routines early in your cat’s life has numerous benefits:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Ease of adaptation:</strong> Young cats adapt more easily to new routines, including teeth cleaning.</li>

<li><strong>Reduced stress:</strong> Familiarity with dental care from a young age means less stress during each cleaning session.</li>

<li><strong>Smoother vet visits:</strong> Cats accustomed to having their mouth touched are more cooperative during oral examinations at the vet.</li>

<li><strong>Avoiding anesthesia:</strong> Regular dental checks can be easier and may not require anesthesia, as your cat is more willing to let the vet do their job.</li>

<li><strong>Long-term oral health:</strong> Early care prevents plaque and tartar buildup, leading to better dental health over your cat’s lifetime.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Selecting the right dental care products</strong>. </h3>

<p>Choose the right tools for effective and safe dental care:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Toothbrushes:</strong> Opt for cat-specific toothbrushes with smaller heads and softer bristles. Finger brushes can also be a good alternative.</li>

<li><strong>Toothpaste:</strong> Always use cat-formulated toothpaste. They’re available in flavors like poultry or fish to make brushing more appealing.</li>

<li><strong>Dental wipes:</strong> Useful for cats resistant to brushing due to added flavor; helps in plaque removal and gum health.</li>

<li><strong>Dental treats and diets:</strong> Unfortunately, there is little evidence about treats or kibble helping to clean cats’ teeth. Apparently, a diet with wet food may help to prevent bacteria associated with oral diseases from building up, though.<a href="#sources">1</a></li>
</ul>

<p>Brushing your cat’s teeth might seem daunting, but with patience and the right technique, it can become a manageable part of your routine. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you master the art of brushing your cat’s teeth:</h3>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Creating a calm environment:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Choose a quiet, comfortable space where your cat feels secure.</li>

<li>Pick a time when your cat is relaxed, perhaps after a meal.</li>

<li>Gently pet and soothe your cat to help her feel at ease.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Introducing the toothbrush and toothpaste:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Let your cat sniff and explore the toothbrush and toothpaste to get familiar with them.</li>

<li>You can apply a small amount of toothpaste on your finger for her to lick off, so she gets used to the taste.</li>

<li>This step should be where you end your very first session. Next time you can try the following steps.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Gently opening your cat&#8217;s mouth:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Approach your cat from the side rather than head-on, which can be less intimidating.</li>

<li>Gently lift her lips to expose the teeth, using as light pressure as possible.</li>

<li>If she resists, don’t force it. Give her a treat and try again later or a day after, ensuring the experience remains neutral.</li>

<li>Repeat this step in multiple sessions until your kitty is comfortable with it. Only then proceed to step 4.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Brushing technique:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Start with a few teeth at a time, gradually increasing as she gets more comfortable.</li>

<li>Use circular motions, focusing on the gum line where plaque tends to accumulate.</li>

<li>Be gentle to avoid gum irritation.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Ensuring safety and comfort:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Never use human toothpaste, as it can be harmful to cats.</li>

<li>If using a finger brush, be mindful of your cat’s comfort level with your finger in her mouth.</li>

<li>Stop immediately if your cat shows any signs of distress such as folded ears, grumbling or tail movements.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Post-brushing reward:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Always end the session with a positive note, like a treat or her favorite playtime.</li>

<li>This helps associate tooth brushing with a pleasant experience.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ol>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Remember, patience is key when it comes to your cat’s health. </h3>

<p>It might take several sessions for your cat to get used to this new routine. Gradually, as she becomes more comfortable, you’ll be able to brush more teeth and for longer periods. Making her feel relaxed and safe should be your priority here.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dietary choices beneficial for healthy teeth</h3>

<p><strong>Food with fillet pieces:</strong> Feeding your cat food that includes fillet pieces can be beneficial. The abrasive texture of the fillets can help clean the teeth to some extent as your cat chews.</p>

<p><strong>Wet food for overall health:</strong> Wet food is often recommended as the preferred diet for cats due to its high moisture content, which is crucial for maintaining overall health. Cats naturally have a low thirst drive and may not drink enough water if fed only dry food. Wet food helps ensure they stay hydrated, which is essential for kidney and urinary tract health. Additionally, it’s generally easier to digest and can be particularly beneficial for cats with certain health conditions.</p>

<p><strong>Same goes for water:</strong> It’s important to encourage drinking by providing multiple water sources. Consider using cat water fountains, as many cats prefer fresh, running water. Strategically placing water bowls in various quiet, accessible spots around your home can also help increase her water intake.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Water additives for dental health</h3>

<p><strong>Plaque-reducing solutions:</strong> While there is some skepticism about their effectiveness, you can consider adding these solutions to drinking water. They are designed to reduce bacteria with chlorhexidine or zinc and therefore freshen breath. Always use products specifically formulated for cats, and if in doubt consult your veterinarian to make sure they’re okay to use.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Toys and accessories for dental care</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Dental toys and chew toys:</strong> Toys designed for dental health can encourage chewing, which helps massage the gums and may remove some soft tartar. Ensure these toys are made from safe, non-toxic materials that cannot be torn apart.</li>

<li><strong>Interactive play:</strong> Regular playtime promotes overall health, which is beneficial for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Common dental ailments in cats</h3>

<p>Noticing any of the following symptoms is a sign you should take your cat to the vet for a dental checkup.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Bad breath:</strong> While a cat’s breath isn’t expected to smell minty fresh, excessively foul breath can indicate dental issues.</li>

<li><strong>Red or swollen gums:</strong> This can be a sign of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).</li>

<li><strong>Difficulty eating or loss of appetite:</strong> If your cat seems hesitant to eat, chews only on one side, or has suddenly lost her appetite, it could be due to dental pain.</li>

<li><strong>Pawing at the mouth:</strong> This behavior may suggest discomfort or pain in the mouth area.</li>

<li><strong>Drooling:</strong> Excessive drooling, especially if the saliva is tinged with blood, is a sign of oral discomfort.</li>

<li><strong>Visible tartar on teeth:</strong> Brown or yellow buildup on the teeth is a sign of tartar accumulation, which can lead to more serious dental conditions.</li>

<li><strong>Changes in behavior</strong>: Reduced playfulness or increased irritability can also indicate dental discomfort and warrant a vet visit.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Regular veterinary check-ups</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Proactive Approach:</strong> Don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Regular veterinary visits, along with home care, are key to preventing dental ailments and ensuring your cat’s long-term oral health.</li>

<li><strong>Examinations:</strong> Schedule them ideally every 6 to 12 months, even if no dental issues are apparent. These visits can catch early signs of dental problems and ensure timely treatment.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The role of professional dental cleanings</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>What happens during a cleaning:</strong> Professional cleanings are performed under anesthesia to allow a thorough examination and cleaning of the teeth and gums. This process includes removing tartar and plaque, polishing teeth, and checking for any signs of dental disease.</li>

<li><strong>Key benefit:</strong> These cleanings can prevent the progression of periodontal disease, and can identify issues that might not be visible to the naked eye.</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Preparing for a vet visit</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Familiarization:</strong> Gradually get your cat accustomed to the carrier and car rides if they aren’t already. If you need to start with basic training, you can take a look at <a href="https://thecatedition.com/living-with-cats/behavior/training-your-cat-the-ultimate-guide-for-a-content-kitty/">our guide here</a>.</li>

<li><strong>Comfort items:</strong> Bring along a favorite blanket or toy to provide the comfort of a known smell in the unfamiliar environment of the vet’s office.</li>

<li><strong>Calm approach:</strong> Maintain a calm demeanor, as cats can pick up on their owner’s anxiety.</li>

<li><strong>Informative discussion:</strong> Be prepared to discuss your cat’s eating habits, behavior, and any concerns you’ve noticed with your vet.</li>
</ul>

<p>By integrating these preventive care strategies, you play a vital role in maintaining your cat’s dental health and overall well-being.</p>

<p>Since cats often hide discomfort, providing proper care when they need it is challenging. By staying vigilant with brushing, recognizing subtle signs of dental issues, and maintaining regular vet visits, we can safeguard our furbabys’ health, ensuring they remain pain-free and content. If you know someone who could benefit from this article, feel free to share it with them!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What makes your cat a senior and when should your start with special care?</h2>

<p>This honestly depends on the breed and the individual cat. Given the fact that most cats reach a maximum age between 10 and 18, it makes sense to at least look at cats older than 8 as middle-aged cats. But as your senior cat might get a bit grumpy with age, it makes sense to get them used to the care measures sooner anyways. Some say you can kind of figure out your cat&#8217;s age in human years if you multiply it by 7.<a href="#sources">1</a> According to that, and if you&#8217;d say we say a senior human needs to be around their mid-60s, a cat would be a senior from about 12 years.</p>

<p>But as said, this is not always the same for every cat. Some cats can be considered seniors with 8 years already, while the AAFP (American Association of Feline Practitioners) considers cats above 10 years to be seniors. They also see &#8220;‘geriatric’ [&#8230;] more [as] a statement of health status, and [not as] specifically associated [to] age&#8221;.<a href="#sources">2</a></p>

<p>As cats transition into their senior years, they may exhibit various signs such as a greying muzzle, unkempt fur, and thinner skin. Behavioral changes are also common; they may meow louder, sleep longer, and play less. They might even, like humans, get dementia. Typical behavior might look like your cat wandering through your home, meowing loudly, seemingly looking for something or someone.</p>

<span id="monitor-behavior-and-physical-changes"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Monitor behavior and physical changes</h2>

<p>It&#8217;s crucial to keep a close watch on older cats as they tend to experience a more rapid decline in health compared to their younger counterparts. You should weigh your cat regularly to keep an eye on their weight – if she loses weight, starts to look thinner, or suddenly ducks away when you touch her at certain parts, do not wait and go to the vet immediately. </p>

<p>Other changes to look out for include increased thirst, lost appetite, overgrooming, inappropriate elimination, and vomiting.</p>

<span id="plan-regular-vet-visits"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">You don&#8217;t have to care for your senior cat alone, plan regular vet visits</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-jpg.webp"><img data-dominant-color="8f8783" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #8f8783;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1600x897.webp" alt="Granny cat at the vet" class="wp-image-4155 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-jpg.webp 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="8f8783" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #8f8783;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1600x897.webp" alt="Granny cat at the vet" class="wp-image-4155 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_standing_on_table_at_the_veterinarian-jpg.webp 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>This is important because you cannot always see changes. Often, digress progresses unseen, so on the surface, your cat might look healthy and fine, but inside she can hide pain or illness. Cats, being natural predators, tend to hide their vulnerabilities, making it challenging to detect when they&#8217;re in pain or unwell. A common recommendation is to <strong>plan vet visits every 6 months</strong>.</p>

<span id="educate-yourself-on-common-senior-cat-diseases"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Educate yourself on common senior cat diseases</h2>

<p>Awareness of common ailments in older or senior cats can help in early detection and care treatment. Also, the outbreak of any illness in seniors is more probable the older the cat is.<a href="#sources">3</a> Learn about how the most frequent cat illnesses can be connected and how to spot them:</p>

<span id="degenerative-joint-disease-djd"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Degenerative joint disease (DJD)</h3>

<p>Feline degenerative joint disease (DJD) is common in cats worldwide. In a study of 101 domestic short-haired cats, around 75% showed signs of DJD in their limbs, and ca. 40% had it in their spine, especially near the tail.<a href="#sources">4</a> Research found that cats with degenerative joint disease also often have chronic kidney disease.<a href="#sources">1</a> So if your cat shows any signs of joint issues, that&#8217;s definitely a sign to monitor her carefully, as it could be indicative of more significant underlying issues.</p>

<span id="hearing-impairments"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hearing impairments</h3>

<p>As your cat ages, her sensitivity to sounds may diminish, making outdoor excursions risky. If you cannot keep watch or don&#8217;t have a cat-proof fence, you should not let her out alone anymore to ensure her safety.</p>

<span id="decreased-vision"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Old cats have a decreased vision</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-jpg.webp"><img data-dominant-color="968b83" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #968b83;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1600x897.webp" alt="Senior kitty sitting on clean floor" class="wp-image-4158 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-jpg.webp 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="968b83" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #968b83;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1600x897.webp" alt="Senior kitty sitting on clean floor" class="wp-image-4158 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/shaggy_cat_full-jpg.webp 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>As with hearing loss, it&#8217;s always harsh for a cat to lose a sense she&#8217;s been relying on. If you notice your cat bumping into things or tripping over cables, you should get her vision checked. If your cats vision really starts to fade, you should always be a little more careful when playing. Not only can she more easily mistake your hand for a toy. You also don&#8217;t want her to run into anything that could hurt her. </p>

<span id="dental-health"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Special dental health care for senior cats</h3>

<p>You&#8217;ll find a list of symptoms to watch out for in this article about <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-health/how-to-recognize-common-cat-illnesses-and-what-to-do/#dental-disease">common cat illnesses</a>. There is evidence that elderly cats with &#8220;bad teeth&#8221; often also exhibit reduced kidney functionality.<a href="#sources">5</a> Also, some experts attribute the frequent occurrence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) to long-term exposure to bacteria in the blood (which can be caused by dental disease).<a href="#sources">3</a> The good news is that researchers also found that dental surgery can improve kidney function in the early stages of CKD as long as there are no other consequences. With elderly cats, longer dental surgery can be risky for the kidney, though, so it&#8217;s best to start with regular dental checks and care for your senior as soon as possible.<a href="#sources">5</a> Rad our <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-health/how-to-take-care-of-your-cats-teeth/">guide about cat dental hygiene</a> to avoid dental problems in the first place. </p>

<span id="chronic-kidney-disease"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Chronic Kidney Disease</h3>

<p>Cats over 15 years have a prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease.<a href="#soruces">3</a> The kidneys often reflect broader health issues, so take any signs of kidney issues seriously. Find out more about those <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-health/how-to-recognize-common-cat-illnesses-and-what-to-do/#kidney-disease">in this article about cat illnesses</a>.</p>

<span id="incontinence"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Incontinence is common in older cats</h3>

<p>You&#8217;ll definitely notice this one. Your cat is making it less and less likely to go to the toilet alone. It&#8217;s possible your cat just got more sensitive due to joint pain and requires a more shallow toilet entry (or a step to get in better). You should still get her to the vet asap, because it could also be a <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-health/how-to-recognize-common-cat-illnesses-and-what-to-do/#feline-lower-urinary-tract-disease-flutd">symptom of FLUTD</a> (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease). If you care a senior cat, think about another cat toilet so her journey becomes shorter.</p>

<span id="diabetes"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Diabetes is a typical risk for senior cats</h3>

<p>The main risk factor for this illness is obesity. Typical symptoms are increased thirst and urination.<a href="#sources">6</a> We also covered it more in-depth <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-health/how-to-recognize-common-cat-illnesses-and-what-to-do/#diabetes">here</a>.</p>

<span id="thyroid-diseases"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Thyroid Diseases</h3>

<p>If your cat shows increased appetite and shaggy fur, let the vet check her thyroid. Diseases like hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) are often followed by kidney issues, cancer, or even heart failure.<a href="#sources">6</a> To check for this should be part of your senior cat&#8217;s regular health check. Read <a href="https://thecatedition.com/cat-health/how-to-recognize-common-cat-illnesses-and-what-to-do/#hyperthyroidism">more about Hyperthyroidism</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="c2ab9a" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #c2ab9a;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1600x897.webp" alt="Old cat rubbing against brush" class="wp-image-4160 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="c2ab9a" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #c2ab9a;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1600x897.webp" alt="Old cat rubbing against brush" class="wp-image-4160 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>Sometimes your elderly kitty is just not able to stretch as well as she used to anymore. That can be due to her joints getting stiffer and might be a hint of arthritis or a similar degenerative joint disease. Places to look out for unkempt fur are especially the chest, stomach, hind legs, lower back, and bottom.</p>

<span id="hypertrophic-cardiomyopathy-hcm"></span>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)</h3>

<p>HCM is the most common form of heart disease, hereditary, and causes enlargement (hypertrophy) of the heart muscle. Since this disease usually starts breaking out around 8 years of age, it&#8217;s very important to start checking the heart regularly, as it can be fatal if left untreated. </p>

<span id="support-grooming-and-skin-care"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Support grooming and skin care</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="b19a91" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #b19a91;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1600x897.webp" alt="Senior cat enjoying a grooming session" class="wp-image-4156 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="b19a91" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #b19a91;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1600x897.webp" alt="Senior cat enjoying a grooming session" class="wp-image-4156 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/brushing_cat_alt.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>You&#8217;ll want to support your furball with grooming in this stage because she can&#8217;t move so well anymore. Places that need a very flexible spine to reach, like her own chest, back, and hind legs might start matting. To assist your senior cat in caring and grooming herself, consider the following types of brushes:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Undercoat Brushes</strong>: These are usually compact and combine wire bristles with scissor-like bristles. They are designed to remove the undercoat, which helps prevent matting.</li>

<li><strong>Knot-Removing Brushes</strong>: These brushes have numerous wire bristles, making them effective for detangling felted knots.</li>

<li><strong>Massage Brushes</strong>: Typically made with synthetic bristles, these brushes are gentler and are ideal for giving your cat a soft skin massage.</li>
</ul>

<span id="feed-your-cat-according-to-age"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Feed your cat according to age</h2>

<p>Most health issues stem from dietary causes, and the older a cat gets, the less resilient she usually is towards illness. To do all you can to support your cat with a senior-friendly diet means that you need to feed your cat with wet food if you don&#8217;t already.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dry food, hydration, and kidney health</h3>

<p>Lots of cats die of kidney disease which likely comes from a <strong>lifelong lack of hydration</strong> due to getting fed <strong>dry food</strong> for complete food. Start adding a few drops of water extra to her wet food, a little more each day until you can stir in a full spoon of (warm) water. This not only makes food more enticing as it slightly warms it up, but also gives a bit of extra hydration.</p>

<p>You should encourage your granny cat to drink. This means placing multiple different dishes around your home she can drink out of. Some cats are spooked by dark water sources, so try using bright bowls. Use a fountain and place the feeding dish a bit further away in order to make the water source more attractive.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Omega Fatty Acids</h3>

<p>Another consideration should be to add wet foods that contain fish oil to your cat&#8217;s diet because it contains omega fatty acids which are beneficial for senior cats.<a href="#sources">2</a> Cats need a certain balance of fatty acids, so do not supplement your cat&#8217;s food without professional help! If you want to know more about supplements, you should talk to a cat nutritionist in your area.</p>

<span id="adapt-your-home"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Adapt your home</h2>

<p>Elderly cats may face mobility challenges. High perches or resting spots might become inaccessible. Their joints might not allow them to jump down from high places with impact because of pain. Consider introducing steps or ramps to aid their movement. Given their reduced mobility and love for warmth, consider lowering the entrance to favorite places and putting e.g. down-filled, warm beds, at resting places.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="5d5045" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #5d5045;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1600x897.webp" alt="Senior cats love warm resting places" class="wp-image-4157 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="5d5045" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #5d5045;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1600x897.webp" alt="Senior cats love warm resting places" class="wp-image-4157 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/old_cat_in_cat_bed2.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>As older cats also have reduced sensory perception, they <strong>smell less</strong>, which means that you might have to change the way you present food to your furball. For example, if you notice that she is getting more finicky with eating, here are some <strong>tricks you can try to make food more enticing for your senior cat</strong>:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Add</strong> a small amount of <strong>snacks</strong> to the food. This stronger smell should fire up her appetite.</li>

<li><strong>Warm up</strong> her food (which also helps to make the smell more intense):
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Add warm water (only if your cat is used to having extra water in her food, otherwise this might upset her stomach) </li>

<li>Microwave the food bowl for a few seconds on a low setting (skin temperature only, it should not steam)</li>

<li>If you use steel bowls, you can warm up the food on your induction stove (if the bowl is hot, please use a different bowl for presenting the food).</li>
</ul>
</li>

<li>Use bowls that have a greater <strong>contrast to the food</strong>. For example, if you serve bright meat, use a dark dish, and the other way around.</li>
</ul>

<span id="provide-mental-and-physical-stimulation"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A senior cat still needs mental and physical stimulation</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-jpg.webp"><img data-dominant-color="523947" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #523947;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1600x897.webp" alt="cat bored by toys" class="wp-image-3835 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-500x280.webp 500w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-jpg.webp 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="523947" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #523947;" decoding="async" width="1600" height="897" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1600x897.webp" alt="cat bored by toys" class="wp-image-3835 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-500x280.webp 500w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/cat_bored_by_toys-jpg.webp 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>Engaging older cats mentally and physically is essential. Some might become lethargic, while others might forget their feeding schedules, leading to overeating. Introduce <a href="https://thecatedition.com/living-with-cats/cat-products/fun-toys-for-your-cat/">puzzle toys</a>, or short play and <a href="https://thecatedition.com/living-with-cats/behavior/training-your-cat-the-ultimate-guide-for-a-content-kitty/">training </a>sessions to keep them active and mentally sharp.</p>

<p>In conclusion, understanding and catering to the unique needs of your senior cat can ensure she&#8217;ll lead a comfortable and fulfilling life in her golden years. We hope this comprehensive overview has provided you with the most important information at a glance. Let us know if you missed anything.</p>

<p>There are many factors that contribute to your cat’s shiny coat, but today our spotlight solely focuses on what you put into your cat’s food bowl. This article will delve deeply into the essential ingredients that help maintain a radiant appearance and healthy skin. Prepare for an in-depth exploration of the science behind your kitty&#8217;s glossy look.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What does food have to do with your cat’s coat?</h2>

<p>When your cat chews food, the <strong>chemical digestion</strong> process starts, transforming the meal’s components into simpler forms. Here’s an overview of how a meal enters through the mouth and ends up in your cat’s fur and skin:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Mouth</strong>: When your cat chews food, enzymes in the saliva start breaking it down. This prepares it for further digestion.</li>

<li><strong>Stomach</strong>: Stomach acids and enzymes like pepsin and lipase convert the food into a semi-liquid form. Known as chyme, this sets the stage for nutrient splitting and absorption in the small intestine.</li>

<li><strong>Small intestine</strong>: Digestive juices from the pancreas and other sources take over, continuing the breakdown process.

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Proteins </strong>are split into individual<strong> amino acids</strong> and dipeptides. Hair contains over 90% protein and constantly regrows along with the skin. Thus, about one-third of the proteins your cat consumes go toward maintenance and regrowth.</li>

<li><strong>Fats</strong> are converted into monoglycerides, diglycerides, glycerol, and <strong>free fatty acids</strong> (FFAs).</li>

<li><strong>Carbohydrates</strong> are simplified into sugars like glucose, fructose, and galactose. They deliver <strong>energy</strong> for your cat’s metabolism.</li>

<li>The inner lining of the small intestine has tiny hair-like projections, called villi. These absorb simplified nutrients like amino acids, simple sugars, and fatty acids into the bloodstream<strong>.</strong></li>
</ul>
</li>

<li><strong>Large intestine</strong>: Here, the body absorbs the most overlooked nutrient, water, aiding in hydrating your cat’s skin.<a href="#sources">1</a></li>
</ul>

<p>In short, the main part of the work to get nutrients broken down is happening in the small intestine. Here, they move into the lining. Then they enter the bloodstream and travel to areas where needed, including your cat’s skin and coat. Now, let’s delve into the essential nutrients responsible for constructing your feline friend’s hair and skin.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which nutrients build cat hair and skin?</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-medium"><a href="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds.jpg"><img data-dominant-color="2d3135" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #2d3135;" decoding="async" width="600" height="336" loading="lazy" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-600x336.webp" alt="Black and grey long haired cat with yellow and blueish eyes with some shiny crystals around her" class="wp-image-3847 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds.jpg 1900w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><noscript><img data-dominant-color="2d3135" data-has-transparency="false" style="--dominant-color: #2d3135;" decoding="async" width="600" height="336" src="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-600x336.webp" alt="Black and grey long haired cat with yellow and blueish eyes with some shiny crystals around her" class="wp-image-3847 not-transparent" srcset="https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-600x336.webp 600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-1600x897.webp 1600w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-770x432.webp 770w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-1536x861.webp 1536w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-640x359.webp 640w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds-1280x717.webp 1280w, https://thecatedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/black-cat-diamonds.jpg 1900w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></noscript></a></figure>

<p>Your cat’s hair consists of almost only protein while her skin is made of both, proteins and fats. This intricate composition is nourished by the nutrient-enriched blood from the small intestine. Through its journey into the dermis, it supplies the epidermis through its network of blood vessels.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Amino acids</strong> become the building blocks for <strong>keratin</strong>, a protein produced by specialized cells called keratinocytes. This <strong>keratin is the primary component of hair and skin</strong> and is essential for their structure. Keratin production is particularly critical in the <strong>epidermis</strong> and <strong>skin appendages</strong>, like hair follicles.</li>

<li><strong>Fatty acids</strong>, especially linoleic and arachidonic acid, nourish the <strong>epidermis</strong> by contributing to the health of the cell membrane. They not only protect the skin cells but also help in retaining moisture, providing a natural glow to the skin and hair. These fatty acids also influence the composition of sebum secreted by <strong>oil glands</strong>, contributing to a healthy, shiny coat.</li>

<li><strong>Carbohydrates</strong> provide the energy required for these cellular processes. They are particularly vital for maintaining the metabolic activities in the <strong>dermis</strong>, which is rich in blood vessels responsible for nutrient supply.</li>

<li><strong>Water</strong> hydrates the skin and fur. It is particularly crucial for the <strong>epidermis</strong>, where it helps maintain the skin’s barrier function, and the <strong>subcutis</strong>, where it contributes to the overall health of this innermost layer.<a href="#sources">1</a></li>

<p>This intricate relationship between various nutrients and skin layers demonstrates the essential role that diet plays in maintaining your cat’s radiant appearance. But there’s still more to learn.</p>

<p>Beyond the mentioned macronutrients, your cat also needs a balanced intake of essential micronutrients. Each of these contributes in a unique way to the health of her skin and coat. We will break down these crucial micronutrients into their respective categories for a better understanding of their individual meaning for your furry friend’s appearance.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The roles of vitamins</h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Vitamin A</strong>: Known for its role in vision, this vitamin also contributes to skin health by promoting <strong>cell growth and differentiation</strong>. It is particularly vital for the <strong>epidermis</strong>, where it aids in the regeneration of skin cells. A deficiency or excess can result in hair loss, poor coat condition, hyperkeratinization of the epidermis and hair follicles, skin lesions, scaling of the skin, and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections of the skin.</li>

<li><strong>B Vitamins</strong>: These vitamins, including Biotin (B7) and Riboflavin (B2), are essential for the health of skin and fur. They are especially important for the <strong>dermis</strong>, where they help in <strong>metabolic activities</strong>, and contribute to the natural shine of your cat’s coat. Deficiencies can lead to dry skin, hair loss, a dull coat, and dermatitis.</li>

<li><strong>Vitamin D</strong>: It ensures the efficient utilization of calcium and phosphorus in the <strong>dermis</strong>. In extreme cases of deficiency, one might expect an overall decline in health, which could indirectly affect the skin and fur.</li>

<li><strong>Vitamin E</strong>: This antioxidant vitamin is crucial for <strong>protecting skin membranes from oxidative damage</strong>. It is vital in the <strong>epidermis</strong> and <strong>dermis</strong>, where it helps in maintaining skin elasticity, and hydration, and supports the production of sebum, the natural oil that keeps the skin moisturized and the coat shiny.</li>
</ul>

<p>Manufacturers usually formulate commercial cat foods to meet the standards set by pet food associations, like the American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), for the minimum nutrient levels required for adult cats. This ensures they contain adequate levels of proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. To be able to meet those guidelines, manufacturers work with veterinary nutritionists and researchers to continually improve formulas based on the latest updates to feline nutrition guidelines. However, it’s crucial to note that not all commercial cat foods are of the same quality.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The importance of quality protein in your cat’s diet</h4>

<p>High-quality proteins are &#8220;highly digestible and contain all of the essential amino acids&#8221;<a href="#sources">1</a>. These are crucial for the synthesis of keratin, the primary protein in your cat’s skin and fur. &#8220;Highly digestible&#8221; means your cat can absorb protein easily, meeting her amino acid needs without extra food. In contrast, lower-quality proteins often lack a complete amino acid profile. As a result, your cat may need to consume more of her sustenance to meet her nutritional requirements, which can lead to obesity and stress, especially in older cats. To ensure that your cat receives a well-rounded array of nutrients, it’s beneficial to incorporate a diverse selection of top-notch foods in her diet. Including a variety of different high-quality foods in your cat’s diet not only exposes her to different ranges of nutrients but also <strong>lowers the risks of relying solely on one source of possibly low-quality protein</strong>.<a href="#sources">1</a></p>

<p>Cats are amazing creatures and beloved family members. They are playful, independent, and full of character. However, like any other pets, they also require proper care and attention, including regular visits to the vet. Finding a good veterinarian for your cat can be a daunting task, but it is crucial for your cat&#8217;s health and well-being. In this blog post, we will provide you with some useful <strong>tips on how to find a fantastic vet for your feline friend</strong>!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Ask for recommendations</h2>

<p>The first step in finding a great vet is to ask for recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues who also own cats. They can provide you with<strong> firsthand experiences and insights into the quality of care</strong> and service provided by the vet. Additionally, local animal shelters, rescue organizations, and pet stores can also be great resources for finding reputable veterinarians in your area.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Check the veterinarian&#8217;s qualifications</h2>

<p>Once you have narrowed down your list of potential vets, it&#8217;s essential to check their qualifications and credentials. Look for a vet who is licensed and has completed accredited veterinary training. You can easily find this information on their website or by calling the clinic. You can also check if the vet is a member of any professional associations or organizations.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Visit the veterinary practice</h2>

<p>Pay a visit to the clinic to observe its cleanliness, organization, and the friendliness of the staff. You can take this opportunity to ask the vet about their experience with cats, <strong>their approach to cat care, and the services they offer</strong>. It&#8217;s also crucial to consider the location and hours of operation of the clinic. Choose a vet that is conveniently located near your home and has operating hours that fit your schedule.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Evaluate the vet&#8217;s communication skills</h2>

<p>Another critical factor to consider is the vet&#8217;s communication skills. A good vet should be approachable, patient, and take the time to explain things clearly. They <strong>should be able to answer all your questions</strong> and provide you with all the information you need to make informed decisions about your cat&#8217;s health.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Consider how the vet interacts with your cat</h2>

<p>How the vet interacts with your cat is crucial. A good vet will take the time to allow your cat to acclimate to its surroundings, and <strong>will not force it out of its crate or carrier if it is scared or stressed</strong>. It&#8217;s essential to ensure that the vet and their staff are gentle, patient, and understanding when handling your cat.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Discuss your cat&#8217;s diet</h2>

<p>Finally, discussing your cat&#8217;s diet with a vet is crucial, as they can advise you on a balanced range of food options that meet your cat&#8217;s nutritional needs. While a vet may not offer a vast selection of food, it&#8217;s important to ensure they prioritize wet food. Dry food can lead to dehydration and kidney damage in the long term. Choosing a vet who understands the importance of hydration in a cat&#8217;s diet can help keep your cat healthy and prevent future health issues.</p>

<p>In conclusion, finding a fantastic vet for your cat requires effort and research, but it is worth it in the end. A <strong>good vet will ensure that your cat receives the best possible care and treatment</strong>, and you can have peace of mind knowing that your furry friend is in good hands. So, take the time to find the perfect vet for your feline friend, and enjoy many happy and healthy years together!</p>

<p>As a cat owner, it&#8217;s important to understand that your furry friend may encounter various health issues throughout its life. <strong>Recognizing the signs of common cat illnesses</strong> and <strong>knowing what to do</strong> can help you take better care of your pet and ensure they live a long, happy, and healthy life. In this blog post, we will discuss some of the <strong>most common cat illnesses</strong>, their symptoms, and how to handle them.</p>

<span id="upper-respiratory-infections"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Upper Respiratory Infections</h2>

<p>Upper respiratory infections (URIs) are quite common in cats, especially those who have been in contact with other cats in shelters or multi-cat households. The most common causes of URIs in cats are feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Upper Respiratory Infection Symptoms</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Sneezing</li>

<li>Nasal discharge</li>

<li>Eye discharge</li>

<li>Coughing</li>

<li>Loss of appetite</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>What to do:</strong> <strong>If you suspect your cat has a URI, take them to the vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment</strong>. Your vet may prescribe antibiotics or antiviral medications, as well as supportive care like fluids and nutritional supplements.</p>

<span id="feline-lower-urinary-tract-disease-flutd"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD)</h2>

<p>FLUTD is an umbrella term for conditions that affect the cat&#8217;s bladder and urethra. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including factors such as urinary stones, infections, or even stress.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">FLUTD Symptoms</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Straining to urinate</li>

<li>Frequent trips to the litter box</li>

<li>Blood in the urine</li>

<li>Urinating outside the litter box</li>

<li>Crying out in pain when urinating</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>What to do:</strong> <strong>If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your veterinarian immediately. FLUTD can be life-threatening, particularly if your cat has a urinary blockage.</strong> Treatment may include medications to manage pain and inflammation, a change in diet to prevent future issues, or even surgery in severe cases.</p>

<span id="dental-disease"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Dental Disease</h2>

<p>Dental disease is common in cats, particularly as they age. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to gingivitis, periodontitis, and even tooth loss if left untreated.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dental Disease Symptoms</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Bad breath</li>

<li>Red, swollen gums</li>

<li>Drooling</li>

<li>Difficulty eating</li>

<li>Weight loss</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>What to do:</strong> Regular dental checkups at the vet are essential for maintaining your cat&#8217;s oral health. Your vet may recommend professional dental cleanings or extractions for severely affected teeth. At home, consider brushing your cat&#8217;s teeth regularly and providing high-quality wet food with pieces of filet to help prevent plaque buildup.</p>

<span id="diabetes"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Diabetes</h2>

<p>Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that affects the way your cat&#8217;s body processes sugar. There are two types of diabetes in cats: Type 1, which occurs when the pancreas doesn&#8217;t produce enough insulin, and Type 2, which occurs when the body doesn&#8217;t use insulin effectively. Type 2 Diabetes is more common in cats and is often associated with obesity.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Diabetes Symptoms</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Increased thirst and urination</li>

<li>Weight loss despite normal or increased appetite</li>

<li>Lethargy</li>

<li>Vomiting</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>What to do:</strong> If you suspect your cat has diabetes, consult your veterinarian for a diagnosis. Diabetes can usually be managed with a combination of insulin injections, a specialized diet, and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels. In some cases, weight loss and dietary changes can help a cat with Type 2 diabetes go into remission.</p>

<span id="kidney-disease"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Kidney Disease</h2>

<p>Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common ailment in older cats. The kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste products from the blood, and when their function declines, toxins can build up, leading to illness.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Kidney Disease Symptoms</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Increased thirst and urination</li>

<li>Weight loss</li>

<li>Loss of appetite</li>

<li>Vomiting</li>

<li>Bad breath with a distinct ammonia-like odor</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>What to do:</strong> If you notice these symptoms in your cat, consult your veterinarian. CKD can be diagnosed through blood tests and urinalysis. While there&#8217;s no cure for CKD, it can be managed with a combination of treatments, including a specialized renal diet, medications to manage symptoms, and fluid therapy to help maintain hydration. Regular check-ups with your veterinarian are essential to monitor your cat&#8217;s condition and adjust treatment as needed.</p>

<span id="hyperthyroidism"></span>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Hyperthyroidism</h2>

<p>Hyperthyroidism is a common hormonal disorder in older cats, caused by an overproduction of thyroid hormones. This can lead to an increased metabolic rate and various health issues.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hyperthyroidism Symptoms</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Weight loss despite an increased appetite</li>

<li>Hyperactivity or restlessness</li>

<li>Increased thirst and urination</li>

<li>Vomiting</li>

<li>Diarrhea</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>What to do:</strong> If you suspect your cat has hyperthyroidism, visit your veterinarian for a blood test to confirm the diagnosis. There are several treatment options available, including medication, radioactive iodine therapy, surgery, or a specialized diet. Your vet will recommend the best course of action based on your cat&#8217;s specific needs.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>

<p>Being aware of the <strong>signs and symptoms of common cat illnesses</strong> is crucial for maintaining your cat&#8217;s health and well-being. <strong>Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and a clean, safe environment can help</strong> prevent many health issues. If you notice <strong>any unusual behavior or symptoms, consult your veterinarian promptly</strong> to ensure your cat receives the appropriate care and treatment. With vigilance and proper care, you can help your feline friend enjoy a long, happy, and healthy life.</p>

<p>Remember that prevention is better than cure, so <strong>make sure to keep up with routine vaccinations</strong>, parasite control, and dental care for your cat. In addition, providing mental and physical stimulation through play, appropriate scratching surfaces, and comfortable resting areas can help <strong>reduce stress</strong>, which plays a significant role in overall health.</p>

<p>By educating yourself on feline health and staying alert to potential issues, you&#8217;ll be better equipped <strong>to recognize common cat illnesses</strong> and take action when needed. The bond between you and your cat is special, and ensuring its health is a crucial part of being a responsible and loving cat owner.</p>

<p>As cat lovers, we all want our furry friends to live long and healthy lives. One of the best ways to ensure your cat stays in tip-top shape is through preventative care. Preventative care for cats involves a combination of regular checkups, vaccinations, and parasite control. By staying on top of these things, you can <strong>help your cat avoid health problems</strong> and catch any issues early on. Let&#8217;s explore each of these aspects of preventative care in more detail.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Regular Checkups</h2>

<p>One of the most important things you can do for your cat&#8217;s health is to <strong>schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian</strong>. Your vet can check for any underlying health issues that may not be immediately apparent, such as dental problems, heart disease, or kidney issues. Regular checkups are essential for maintaining your cat&#8217;s health and preventing any underlying health issues.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What&#8217;s happening during a medical examination?</h3>

<p>During a checkup, your veterinarian will typically conduct a <strong>thorough physical exam, including checking your cat&#8217;s eyes, ears, teeth, and coat</strong>. They may also take your cat&#8217;s temperature, listen to its heart and lungs, and feel its abdomen. Your vet may recommend additional tests, such as blood work or urinalysis, to check for any underlying health issues. Regular checkups also give you the opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have with your vet and receive advice on how to best care for your cat&#8217;s health. By scheduling regular checkups with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that your cat stays healthy and happy for years to come.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Core and Non-Core Vaccinations</h2>

<p>Vaccinations are another critical aspect of preventative care for cats. Core vaccinations<strong> protect against serious and potentially fatal diseases such as rabies, feline distemper, and feline herpes virus</strong>. Non-core vaccinations are recommended based on your cat&#8217;s lifestyle and risk of exposure to certain diseases. For example, cats who spend time outdoors may need vaccinations for the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or Bordetella.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s important to keep your cat up-to-date on its vaccinations to ensure it stays protected against these diseases. Your veterinarian can advise you on which vaccinations your cat needs and when it should receive them.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Parasite Control</h2>

<p>Lastly, maintaining a consistent parasite control regimen is crucial for your cat&#8217;s health. <strong>Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and worms can cause a variety of health issues</strong>, including anemia, diarrhea, and even death in severe cases. Your veterinarian can recommend the best parasite prevention products for your cat, based on its lifestyle and risk of exposure.</p>

<p>In addition to using preventative products, it&#8217;s also important to check your cat regularly for signs of parasites. Symptoms of a parasitic infestation may include itching, scratching, and skin irritation. If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>

<p>Preventative care is essential for keeping your cat healthy and happy. Regular checkups, vaccinations, and parasite control are all critical aspects of a preventative care regimen. By staying on top of these things, <strong>you can help ensure your cat lives a long, healthy life</strong>. Remember to schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian, keep your cat up-to-date on its vaccinations, and maintain a consistent parasite prevention regimen. Your cat will love you for it!</p>

<p>Are you ready to become a feline nutrition guru and help your fur baby live its best life? As a cat owner, ensuring that your feline friend receives the <strong>proper nutrients is crucial for maintaining its overall health and well-being</strong>. Cats, being obligate carnivores, require specific nutrients that are typically found in animal-based sources. It is essential to understand these dietary needs to help your cat live a long, healthy life. This blog post will delve into the <strong>essential nutrients your cat needs</strong> and how to provide them through a balanced diet.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Protein: Mighty building blocks for your cat’s body</h2>

<p>Protein is your cat&#8217;s best friend! <strong>Cats require a high-protein diet</strong> as it is essential for maintaining muscle mass, hair growth, and many vital body functions. Animal-based protein sources such as chicken, turkey, fish, and beef are recommended because they contain complete amino acid profiles that cats need. Look for <strong>high-quality protein sources</strong> in your cat&#8217;s food, and avoid meat by-products and fillers.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Taurine: A vital amino acid for your cat’s heart and vision</h2>

<p>This is the secret weapon your cat&#8217;s heart and eyes need. <strong>The amino acid taurine is crucial for your cat&#8217;s heart function, vision, and overall health</strong>, and is found primarily in meat and fish. Cats cannot produce enough taurine on their own, which means they must obtain it through their diet. Insufficient taurine intake can lead to severe health problems such as dilated cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration. Make sure your cat&#8217;s food contains a sufficient amount of taurine to prevent these health issues. Most commercial cat foods are fortified with taurine, but always check the label to ensure it is included.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Fatty acids: Essential for a healthy coat and skin</h2>

<p>Omega-3 and omega-6 <strong>fatty acids are crucial for maintaining your cat&#8217;s skin and coat health</strong>. These nutrients also support the immune system and reduce inflammation. Cats cannot produce essential fatty acids on their own, so they must be provided through their feed. Fish oil, salmon, and flaxseed are excellent sources of omega-3, while animal fats and vegetable oils are rich in omega-6. Look for cat food with a balanced ratio of these fatty acids to ensure your cat receives the appropriate amounts of nutrients.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Vitamins and minerals: Health-boosting dream team</h2>

<p>Vitamins and minerals play essential roles in your cat&#8217;s health, including bone development, immune function, and metabolism regulation. Cats require specific vitamins, such as A, D, E, and K, and minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. Some of these nutrients are found naturally in animal-based sources, while others may need to be added to their diet. <strong>High-quality commercial cat foods are usually formulated to meet these vitamin and mineral requirements</strong>, but it is always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian to ensure your cat&#8217;s dietary needs are being met.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Water: The most vital nutrient of all</h2>

<p>Proper hydration is essential for your cat&#8217;s overall health, as it aids in digestion, circulation, and waste elimination. <strong>Cats have a low thirst drive and may not drink enough water on their own, so it&#8217;s crucial to encourage water intake</strong>. Providing fresh, clean water daily is a must, and you can also consider using water fountains and multiple sources of water in different places. The best way to <strong>ensure your cat gets enough water is to offer wet food to increase their water consumption</strong>. Dehydration can lead to severe health problems, so keep an eye on your cat&#8217;s water habits and help them stay well-hydrated.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>

<p>Ensuring your cat receives the essential nutrients they need is crucial for its overall health and well-being. By providing a top-notch, balanced diet that includes protein, taurine, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and water, you&#8217;ll help your feline friend thrive. Remember to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best diet for your cat, considering factors such as age, weight, and health status.
